Modeled on Ovid’s Ars amatoria (c. 1 bc; Art of Love), the poem is composed of more than 21,000 lines of octosyllabic couplets and survives in more than 300 manuscripts. Sep 19, 2018 · The ‘Romance of the Rose’, a medieval French poem that takes the form of an allegorical dream vision, was written by two successive authors: Guillaume de Lorris in the late 1230s, and Jean de Meun, who completed it almost forty years later.
After his death, the majority of his personal library was bought in 1922 by the National Library. It contained over six thousand items, including 40 medieval manuscripts, manuscripts relating to Sussex, personal notebooks and more than one copy of the early French text, Roman de la rose.
