The effect of Pissarro’s instruction on Cézanne’s art was transformative, freeing him from his youthful, imaginary and often violent subjects in dark paint slapped on with a palette knife.
In 1881 Cézanne worked in Pontoise with Paul Gauguin and Pissarro; Cézanne returned to Aix at the end of the year. He later accused Gauguin of having stolen his "little sensation" from him and that Gauguin, on the other hand only painted chinoiseries. [44]
Beginning to paint in 1860 in his birthplace of Aix-en-Provence and subsequently studying in Paris, Cézanne’s early pictures of romantic and classical themes are imbued with dark colors and executed with an expressive brushwork in the tradition of Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863).
Pontoise is the capital of the natural region and the former province of French Vexin. The city developed from the High Middle Ages, on the Saint-Martin plateau, to the south, and its commercial vitality was already notable in the 9th century because one could cross the Oise there.
