Neosho County, originally named Dorn and one of the original 1855 counties, was established in 1861. It is named after the Neosho River which was named by the Osage, which inhabited the area long before Kansas became a territory.

The first post office was established at the Catholic Mission in 1856. On June 3, 1861, the name of Dorn County was changed and became the counties of Neosho and Labette. Osage Catholic Mission, 1865. During the Civil War, Neosho County played its full part in furnishing soldiers for the front.
It was founded from the northern part of Dorn county (q. v.), which was changed to Neosho, by the first state territorial legislature in 1861. The actual organization of the county was in 1864. In 1866 the boundaries were fixed to include the territory of what is now Neosho and Labette counties.
Neosho County was established in 1861. It took its name from the Neosho River, which runs through the county. Erie is the county seat.
The Neosho County Record was established in 1876 by George W. McMillin. In May 1877, J.W. Stewart sold his interest in the roller mill to A N. Bruner. In 1880, Erie had two general stores, two blacksmith shops, a drug store, two hotels, a newspaper office, two churches, and a population of about 300.
