Sep 5, 2023 · The city of Detroit Lakes was founded by Colonel George Johnston in 1871. The city grew quickly with the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1877, an election finally decided that Detroit Lakes, then still known as Detroit, was to become the county seat.

Detroit Lakes was founded by Colonel George Johnston, who came to Minnesota in 1871 to select lands for the New England Colony. After extensive examinations, Johnston numbered sections which established Detroit Township. In 1873, Detroit Township boasted the first grain warehouse built west of Duluth on the Northern Pacific Railroad.
In 1817, in collaboration with Father Gabriel Richard, Augustus Woodward, Lewis Cass and William Woodbridge, Monteith established a school, called “Catholepistemiad,” as a means to provide education from the lowest primary grade through college.
The Edmund Atkinson School was built as an elementary school in 1927. Detroit Public Schools closed the building in 2007, and in 2010 sold it to National Heritage Academy for $600,000. The building has reopened as Legacy Charter Academy.
