Lincolnshire Constabulary was formed in 1856 under the County and Borough Police Act 1856. Several other borough police forces used to exist in the county, but these were eventually combined with the Lincolnshire force.
The Old Nick Museum was the original Divisional Headquarters for the Lincolnshire Constabulary and former Magistrates Court from 1860 to 1974. The museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying the history of Lincolnshire Police and visitors can explore the cells, exercise yards and Victorian Charge Room.

The first Police Station and "lock-up house" was established in Gainsborough in 1843, some years before the Lincolnshire constabulary formed in 1859. This building in Torr Street - still standing, but not given the dignity it deserves - served it's purpose until the new Police station was opened in Spring Gardens in 1850.
