Sir Walter Raleigh organized a group of settlers who landed in 1585 on North Carolina’s Roanoke Island, off the coast of Virginia, a region named by the Virgin Queen Elizabeth in honor of herself. With Raleigh busy at home, the Roanoke colony suddenly vanished.
Founded in 1634 by Lord Baltimore, Maryland was the second plantation colony and the fourth overall colony to be formed. It was founded to be a place for persecuted Catholics to find refuge, a safe haven.
