There are many different theories about the origin of the name “Adria”, most of them are linked to the myth. Indeed, it is told that Dyomedes, the Ulysses' companion during the Troyan war, shipwrecked and found salvation in a peaceful beach. There he founded a town and called it “Aetria”, which means “peaceful”.
Toward the end of the 4th c. B.C., Atria was probably occupied by the Gauls, as seems to be indicated by the discovery of funerary furniture similar to that found in Gallic tombs. In the Roman period, Atria became a municipium inscribed on the rolls of the tribus Camilia.
It has also been generally admitted that a Greek colony was founded there by Dionysius the Elder, at the time that he was seeking to establish his power in the Adriatic, about B.C. 385; but this statement rests on very doubtful authority (Etym. Magn. v. Ἀδρίας), and no subsequent trace of the settlement is found in history.
