- EasyJet. EasyJet says it “directly advises customers in advance of what time to arrive for their flight” by email, in the days before travel - so look out for that.
- British Airways. Like easyJet, you can check in online and print your own boarding pass for the speediest airport experience - this is available from 24 hours before your flight.
- Ryanair. The budget carrier’s bag drop opens two hours before your flight’s departure time, and closes 40 minutes before it. So you can arrive somewhat earlier to allow for check-in queueing time, but you likely won’t be able to drop off your case before the two-hour mark.
- Tui. Tui has more clear-cut advice than most carriers on its website: “At UK airports, Bag Drop desks open two to three hours before your departure time.
Most airports have now dropped the advice to arrive three hours before a short-haul flight. In fact several told us they needed passengers not to arrive too early for their flight because the check-in desk may not be open and it adds to congestion at airport security.
For most international flights, you should arrange to be at the airport between 1.5 and three hours prior to your scheduled departure time. When travelling during peak seasons, we advise that you arrive at the airport earlier than the above recommendations to ensure you have enough time for check-in and for passing through security and immigration.

Airlines generally advise that you should get to the airport at least two hours before your short-haul international flight – but if you need to check in at the desk or drop off bags, consider getting there earlier, especially if you’re travelling in peak times. Three is the magic number for long-haul flights. Airlines generally recommend getting to the airport at least three hours before your flight time because international flights (and their larger planes) tend to have longer queues at check-in and security to account for the greater number of passengers.
While knowing the general suggested arrival times for airports is a good benchmark for planning, you should always check your airline’s guidance to check how early you need to be at the airport prior to departure. We’ve rounded up 15 of the UK’s most popular airports’ recommended arrival times to give you a helping hand.
1. Can you check-in online?
Online check-inand carrying hand luggage only can shave minutes off your time at the airport as you can skip straight to security in most cases. Airlines such as easyJet and Jet2 open online check-in as early as 28 days before your flight, so you can get this ticked off your travel checklist well in advance.
2. Do you have bags to check?
If you need to check baggage, there’s often a separate desk or self-drop-off points for your airline. Self-check kiosks are usually the quickest option, but bear in mind that not all airlines offer these, and queues for bag drops can be long.
3. When does your airline ask you to be at the airport?
Though the rule of thumb is two hours before you fly, some airlines ask you to arrive at the airport a lot earlier or later than the airport guidelines. Always check your booking confirmation for guidance.
Verify your departure time online
Double check your flight information before leaving for the airport. Make sure to note all timings such as check-in, boarding and departure time.
Print your boarding pass at home
If you can check in online and can print or download your boarding pass, you can sail straight through to security once you arrive at the airport – providing you have no bags to check.
Get the airline app
Downloading your airline’s app can be a real timesaver at the airport. Not only can you get real-time flight updates, but you can also check-in through the app and have all your booking details and boarding passes to hand.
Jun 30, 2022 · Check when to arrive at the airport. Check with your airline. Allow for longer check-in times as airlines may need to check COVID-19 related documents. Don’t arrive earlier than the earliest...
When to arrive: Check your ticket or contact your airline for specific advice on checking-in times. The following times serve as a general guide and generally we recommend you arrive at least two hours before your flight to allow plenty of time. Long-haul flights: check-in opens around three hours before your scheduled departure
With that in mind, double check your flight time. Make sure you arrive at the airport: at least 2 hours before a short-haul flight. 3 hours before a long-haul flight. That’ll give you enough time to clear the check in, make your way through security and enjoy some duty-free shopping before making your way to your gate.
