In 2000 Vivendi Universal was created from the merger with Groupe Canal+ and Seagram Company Ltd. (owner of Universal Studios). In 2006 it sold off most of the Universal components and its name reverted to Vivendi.
Through its 2000 purchase of Seagram Company Ltd., it gained control of Universal Music Group and Universal Studios, securing its position as the leading music company with a 22 percent share of the world music market.
The resulting company was named NBCUniversal, while Universal Studios Inc. remained the name of the production subsidiary. After that deal, GE owned 80% of NBC Universal; Vivendi held the remaining 20%, with an option to sell its share in 2006.
In July 2000, Seagram merged Universal Studios with Vivendi. [18] After the merger closed, UIS was transitioned to Vivendi's Havas Interactive division and was eventually downgraded to a publishing label of the now-named Vivendi Universal Interactive Publishing. [19]
