In 2000 Vivendi Universal was created from the merger with Groupe Canal+ and Seagram Company Ltd. (owner of Universal Studios). In 2006 it sold off most of the Universal components and its name reverted to Vivendi.
The deal added Universal Music Group and Universal Studios to Vivendi's holdings, giving it control of the world's largest music company. It also purchased the remaining shares of CANAL+ and then changed its name once again to Vivendi Universal.
In June 2000, Seagram was sold to French water utility and media company Vivendi, which owned StudioCanal; the conglomerate then became known as Vivendi Universal. In the spring of 2003, MCA Records was folded into Geffen Records .
In 2004, Universal Interactive was consolidated under its parent company Vivendi Universal Games, and the label was discontinued. It remained as a copyright holder for existing properties, but all titles were published under either Vivendi Universal Games or Sierra.
