Oct 23, 2024 · In 1978, MCA made its foray onto home video, by launching MCA DiscoVision. In addition to DiscoVision, several other companies licensed out the format to MCA, most notably Disney, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros.
In late 1983, both the Laserdisc sister label MCA Videodisc and the MCA Videocassette label were consolidated into a single entity, MCA Home Video, alternating with the MCA Videocassette, Inc. name until December 1983.

Background. In 1990, MCA Home Video was renamed into MCA/Universal Home Video, to capitalize on the Universal name and to coincide with Universal's 75th anniversary. The company absorbed the assets of SGE Home Video in 1991 in order to release titles from Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment there.
On December 9, 1996, MCA/Universal Home Video renamed itself as "Universal Studios Home Video" when MCA was reincorporated as Universal Studios. It began to distribute titles from third-party companies, like Lionsgate Films, October Films, DreamWorks Pictures and The Kushner-Locke Company.

History. The company was founded in 1980 as MCA Videocassette, Inc., with the release of films on Beta and VHS, including Jaws, Jaws 2, and 1941. Prior to 1980, Castle Films (known as Universal 8 after 1977) had served as Universal's home film distribution unit.
