The First Doctor has featured in many novels since his first appearance in 1963.

In 1964 and 1965, the Frederick Muller publishing house published three novelisations of Doctor Who television serials. These were later reprinted by Target Books in 1973, as part of their own line of novelisations.

World Distributors, Ltd published the Doctor Who annuals from 1966 to 1986. In 1966, they released an original novella featuring William Hartnell's Dr. Who. This was the first officially-published original long-form text story to feature the Doctor, and it remained the only such story until Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma in 1986.

In 1974, Target Books began a range of novel-length adaptations of Doctor Who television stories. This range continued until 1994 but resumed again from 2018.

After taking the license for Doctor Who novels from Virgin Books in 1996, BBC Books began to publish a series of Doctor Who novels. Eight of these focused exclusively on the First Doctor, and one featured him alongside other incarnations.
