Sep 25, 2018 · St Mary’s High School opened in 1955 – well…sort of. On September 6th, 1955, Edmonton’s South Side Separate School students arrived at their new school…only for the Girls to be shuttled off to St Margaret’s and the Boys to Mount Carmel for registration!
In September 1928, Sister Mary Petranda, the principal of St. Mary’s High School, realizing the need for secondary school education for girls in this city, offered the Grades 9 and 10 courses until better accommodations were available.
In August 1888, Edmonton Catholic parents applied to organize a separate school district for their children. In October of that same year three sisters from the Faithful Companions of Jesus sailed from France to open a convent and a school in Edmonton.
Edmonton Public Schools' continuum grades are commonly found in two grade level groupings: kindergarten through grade six being Elementary and grades 7 through 12 being Secondary. Further, Secondary grade groupings can be broken into Junior High (7-9) and Senior High (10-12) schools.

St. Joseph High School first opened in 1930 as the first high school for the Catholic boys in the Edmonton region. In the 1950s with the closing of St. Mary's High School, St. Joseph opened its doors to girls. [1] Since 1998, St. Joseph's High School has offered self-directed learning programs.
