In 1948, with the end of the U.S. military government, South Korea declared its independence from Japan as the Republic of Korea. In 1952, when Japan approved the independence of the Korean region under the San Francisco Peace Treaty, it became a completely independent and sovereign nation under international law.
The peninsula was divided at the 38th Parallel: the "Republic of Korea" was created in the south, with the backing of the US and Western Europe, and the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" in the north, with the backing of the Soviets and the communist People's Republic of China.
The official diplomatic relationship between the Republic of Korea (referred to as Korea hereafter) and the European Union (EU) was inaugurated in November 1963, and has since been upgraded continuously to reach the status of a strategic partnership in 2010.
