Vassar College (/ ˈvæsər / VASS-ər) is a private liberal arts college in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. Founded in 1861 by Matthew Vassar, it was the second degree-granting institution of higher education for women in the United States. The college became coeducational in 1969.
Recognized as one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country, Vassar has successfully fulfilled its founder’s goals. An English-born brewer and businessman, Matthew Vassar established his college in Poughkeepsie, New York, a small city on the Hudson River, 75 miles north of New York City.
Matthew Vassar (1792–1868), a prosperous Poughkeepsie brewer, became a pioneer for women’s education and the study of the liberal arts in the United States when he founded Vassar College in 1861.
Dec 2, 2016 · 1854 -- Poughkeepsie became a city (chartered 28 March 1854). 1859 -- Harvey Gridley Eastman, cousin of George Eastman of Eastman Kodak fame, arrived in Poughkeepsie and started the Eastman Business College which would become the largest business college in the nation.

In 1960, it was renamed Marist College with an enrollment of 250 students. 1947 -- Sarah Gibson Blanding became the first woman president of Vassar. During the late 1940s and into the 1950s, the increased traffic could not flow through Poughkeepsie without encountering major delays.
Jun 9, 2023 · January 15, 1920. Eighty-five members of the Vassar faculty joined the Poughkeepsie Trade and Labor Council in sending letters to the New York State Assembly protesting the ouster of five duly elected Socialist members on charges of “disloyalty.”
