Jun 20, 2017 · Using images to communicate the news, photojournalism has shaped the way we view the world since the mid-19th century. What began as war photography has slowly spread to other newsworthy events, including sports, and even long-form storytelling through photo essays.
The Golden Age of photojournalism also witnessed the rise of influential photo essays. These essays, often published in magazines, used a series of photographs to tell a cohesive and compelling story. One notable example is W. Eugene Smith’s essay “Country Doctor,” published in Life magazine in 1948.
Photojournalism began with the first pictures of war published in newspapers during the Crimean War and the American Civil War. However even at this time, the image was only there to enhance the text, not lead the story.
With the rise of many photo magazines, and the overall turn of the medium to a greater reliance on imagery, the so-called "photo-essay" became a popular method for covering news and human interest stories.
