Of the hundreds of aularian houses that sprang up across the city, only St Edmund Hall (c.1225) remains. What put an end to the halls was the emergence of colleges. Oxford's earliest colleges were University College (1249), Balliol (1263) and Merton (1264).

It was during the 12th century that the University really began to grow; well-respected teachers began to lecture there and students came to live and study in Oxford.
He did so, formalising the situation to boot: on June 20 1214 a charter was given to the University of Oxford: among its provisions were that a Chancellor should be appointed (by the Bishop of Lincoln) as its titular head; and that the scholars should have their own court.
