High school continued at Jefferson Square under Principal John Kellom, then moved to Jackson Street between 14th and 15th, then (in 1872) to new building on Capitol Hill. First permanent public high school in Omaha. In 1871 there were 3,378 children of school age in Omaha, only 2,496 in school.

On November 10, 1859, Omaha Central High School began as Omaha High School in the Nebraska Territory capitol building. In 1869, after the territorial government was removed from Omaha, the capitol building was donated to the City of Omaha by the Nebraska state government for educational use only.
Central traces its beginning to Omaha's first all-grade public school, opened in 1859 by the Superintendent of Education, Howard Kennedy. But it was another twelve years before the fledgling school district actually constructed a separate high school.
