[2] Located within the Muscogee Nation Reservation, the county was created at statehood in 1907. The name Okmulgee is derived from the Hitchita (Lower Creek) word okimulgi, meaning "boiling waters".

Then known as Okmulke, it wasn’t until 1883 that it got the spelling we know today. The town, which is the Capital of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, was also the governmental seat of what would soon become Oklahoma.
Evans was elected first mayor. The railroad, the Frisco, arrived in Okmulgee, bringing with it a flurry of immigrants to the city. The first train arrived from Tulsa on July 5th, 1900. Regular train service was inaugurated July 16th. Hundreds gathered to see the first train come in.
