Ohio Wesleyan has been acquiring traditions since 1844, when the College of Liberal Arts opened its doors with an enrollment of 29 male students taught by three professors. In 1853, the Ohio Wesleyan Female College, an independent institution, was established in Delaware and four years later moved into the new Monnett Hall.
In 1902, the Ohio Wesleyan team joined Case Tech, Kenyon, Oberlin, Ohio State, and Western Reserve in forming the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The first gym of the college, Edwards Gymnasium, was dedicated in February 1906.
After the loss to Ohio State, Ohio Wesleyan went on to win eight consecutive games and capture the Ohio Athletic Conference championship with a perfect 7-0 record. The 1922 season launched a string of 14 consecutive winning seasons for Ohio Wesleyan.
Ohio Wesleyan’s first varsity men’s basketball team played its games in the still-unfinished Edwards Gymnasium, compiling a 4-4 record in 1906. The Bishops won back-to-back Buckeye Conference championships in 1928-29 and 1929-30 before winning 3 straight crowns from 1933-34 to 1935-36.
