With the departure of the 398th, Nuthampstead was transferred from the USAAF to RAF Maintenance Command on 10 July 1945. The airfield was used as an ordnance store until being placed under care and maintenance on 30 October 1954. Nuthampstead was finally closed on 1 March 1959.
The airfield finally closed on 1st March 1959. The airfield then reverted to farm land and approximately seven-eighths of the total widths of the runways and perimeter tracks were broken up the St. Ives Sand and Gravel Company and used as hardcore for the M1 motorway.
Feb 21, 2017 · The Woodman Inn, located in Nuthampstead, England, was one of the only building that was within the boundaries of the United States Army Air Force’s post 131 station during World War II. The inn acted as a meeting place where American Airmen could meet with their host residents.

The first visit to NUTHAMPSTEAD was in May 1993, with the Cessna 172 G-AXBH out of TOP FARM with my good flying friend Guy Browning. As I remember, as often as not very little was planned in advance, and sometimes we'd arrive at TOP FARM, look at the weather and the chart and then decide where to go.
Transferred to the RAF in July 1945, Nuthampstead was used as a Maintenance Unit ordnance store until 1954 and eventually closed in 1959. In the 1960s, it was one of the sites considered for London's third airport, but was ultimately rejected in favour of Stansted.
