On April 24, 1837, Muskingum College opened. Muskingum became a coeducational institution in 1854. In 1958, the United Presbyterian Church of North America and the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America merged by signing a historic agreement in Brown Chapel on Muskingum's campus.
On March 18, 1837, Muskingum College’s charter was granted by the Ohio State Legislature, to educate the sons of the farming village of New Concord in the classical college tradition.
Women were first enrolled in 1854. The institution grew in the decades following the American Civil War, and its initial classical orientation evolved into a liberal arts curriculum. In 1877 Muskingum became associated with the Ohio synod of the United Presbyterian Church.
