On July 15, 1964, MCA established the Studio Tour, which provided guests a behind-the-scenes glimpse of film and television production at Universal Studios. This established a footprint of what is now known as Universal Studios Hollywood theme park.
Dedicated on July 9 1963 and opened in 1964 (tbc), the imposing “Black Tower” (constructed of black aluminium and glass) houses the executive offices where scripts are read and and careers are made (or broken). The building was named in honour of the head of MCA, Lew Wasserman, by Edgar Bronfman following his takeover of Universal.
Following the rising postwar popularity of television and the resulting near bankruptcy of many studios, Wasserman purchased Universal Studios and Decca Records in 1962 and merged them with MCA. In 1966, he singlehandedly installed Jack Valenti as head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
