Founded in 1854 as the New Danville Masonic Female Academy near Kilgore, Lon Morris College was the oldest existing two-year college in Texas until its closure in 2012. In 1873, the academy moved to Kilgore and became property of the Kilgore Methodist Church, changing its name to the Alexander Institute in honor of its president Isaac Alexander, an early Texas educator.
Aug 16, 2009 · In 1924 the name changed to Lon Morris College in honor of the Rev. R.A. (Lon) Morris, a Pittsburg, Texas banker, Methodist lay preacher, and friend of Dr. Alexander who endowed the college with a grant of $10,500. Through the years financial problems were an issue.
In 1924, the name was changed to Lon Morris College after Mr. R.A. (Lon) Morris left his entire estate to the school. Graduates in each generation of the school's history would become leaders in all walks of life. Many in Texas, especially in Jacksonville, still grieve the closing of this storied institution.
The later school seals give 1873 as the founding date of Lon Morris College. This was the date that the New Danville Masonic Female Academy (founded 1847) moved to Kilgore, became co-educational, adopted a college prep curriculum, became sectarian Methodist, and changed its name to Alexander Institute to honor its principal, Isaac Alexander.
