Feb 5, 2018 · Eli Waite Hoyt was born in Alexandria, NY in 1838 and moved with his parents to Lowell, MA in 1846. He started working in the apothecary shop of E. A. Staniels in 1851 and eventually became Staniel’s partner. When Staniels passed away in 1863, Hoyt took over the shop. Not long afterward, he formulated a men’s cologne to sell there.
The shoe company became the largest manufacturer of its kind, employing 1500 people at its New Haven factory. 1844 Charles Goodyear, a New Haven-bred inventor discovered how to vulcanize rubber into a hard substance in 1843, setting the stage for the first rubber shoe and boot made by L. Candee & Company Rubber Shoes & Boots in 1844.
The Young Men’s Hebrew Association, which would become the Jewish Community Center, was founded in an office building at 200 Orange Street in 1917. After several downtown moves, the Jewish Community Center built a new facility at 1156 Chapel Street, an expansive modern facility. The present site of the Jewish Community Center is in Woodbridge.
