Hot Rod is an American car magazine devoted to hot rodding, drag racing, and muscle cars—modifying automobiles for performance and appearance. It was published monthly until 2024, when it transitioned to quarterly publication.
Around 1947, Petersen and a group of former co-workers at MGM formed their own consulting firm called Hollywood Publicity Associates. One of the firm's projects was advertising for a hot rod exhibition. Fortunately for Petersen, his automobile knowledge came in handy.
Hot Rod Magazine was launched by Trend in January 1948. The very first Hot Rod Magazine was created as the program for the first annual Hot Rod Exposition at the National Guard Armory in Los Angeles, California.
