British Railways was formed on 1 January 1948 as a result of the Transport Act 1947, which nationalised the Big Four British railway companies along with some other (but not all) smaller railways.
The Lousia Railroad was chartered in 1836 to run from Frederick Hall to a junction with the RF&P at what is now Doswell. The line was extended westward to Lousia and Gordensvillle and extended eastward to Richmond. The name was changed to the Virginia Central in 1847.
