  6. The village was founded in 1744. It was originally known as Thorp Spa but changed its name to Boston Spa in 1753. The name ‘Boston’ is thought to be a contraction of ‘Botolph’s Town’ or ‘Botolph’s Stone’. It became a popular spa town in the 18th century after a mineral spring was discovered.
