The village was founded in 1744. It was originally known as Thorp Spa but changed its name to Boston Spa in 1753. The name ‘Boston’ is thought to be a contraction of ‘Botolph’s Town’ or ‘Botolph’s Stone’. It became a popular spa town in the 18th century after a mineral spring was discovered.

Dec 1, 2002 · The library became known worldwide as Boston Spa. However, the Christmas post became too much for the small Boston Spa village Post Office. In the end all the mail was delivered to the library, we then took out our mail and gave the village back their Christmas cards and presents.
