Robert Bellarmine SJ (Italian: Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino; 4 October 1542 – 17 September 1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was canonized a saint in 1930 [ 1 ] and named Doctor of the Church , one of only 37.

Bellarmine was one of the brightest theologians of his time, and is hailed as the patron saint of catechumens and catechists. His work involved countering the heresy that flooded out of the Protestant Reformation. Bellarmine was born on Oct. 4, 1542, to a poor Italian family.
In 1605 Clement VIII died, and was succeeded by Leo XI who reigned only twenty-six days, and then by Paul V . In both conclaves, especially that latter, the name of Bellarmine was much before the electors, greatly to his own distress, but his quality as a Jesuit stood against him in the judgment of many of the cardinals. Because of his reputation as a scholar and his expertise in Protestantism, in 1589 Bellarmine was sent as a theologian to accompany the papal legate to Paris at a time when France was on the brink of a religious civil war.
There is a possibility that Bellarmine's arguments influenced British antimonarchist thinking and, through John Locke, the founders of American democracy. He also recognized something of the investment value of money and helped to modify the older Catholic theory that all taking of interest on loans was to be condemned as usury.
