Robert Bellarmine SJ (Italian: Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino; 4 October 1542 – 17 September 1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was canonized a saint in 1930 [ 1 ] and named Doctor of the Church , one of only 37.
Sep 30, 2024 · Bellarmine entered the Society of Jesus in 1560. After studying in Italy at Rome, Mondovì, and Padua, he was sent to Leuven (Louvain) in the Spanish Netherlands, where he was ordained in 1570 and began to teach theology.

He succumbed to death 3 weeks later with the name of Jesus on his lips. At his request, Cardinal Bellarmine was buried at the feet of St Aloysius Gonzaga, whom he once guided as a young novice in Rome. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI and declared a Doctor of the Universal Church in 1931 .
In both conclaves, especially that latter, the name of Bellarmine was much before the electors, greatly to his own distress, but his quality as a Jesuit stood against him in the judgment of many of the cardinals.

When Bellarmine was 50, he was made rector of the Jesuit College in Rome. Two years later, in 1594, he was appointed provincial superior of the Jesuits in Naples. Pope Clement VIII brought him back to Rome in 1597 to be his personal theological adviser and 2 years later made him a cardinal.
