In 1964, 16-year-old Furnier was eager to participate in Cortez High School's annual Letterman's talent show, so he gathered four fellow cross country teammates to form a group for the show: Glen Buxton, Dennis Dunaway, John Tatum, and John Speer. At age 17, he formed a rock band called the Earwigs, who changed their name to The Spiders and then The Nazz, before finally settling on Alice Cooper. The line-up included himself, Dennis Dunaway , Michael Bruce , Glen Buxton and Neal Smith .

The group's first major concert had them opening for the Doors on June 18, 1967. [5] In Phoenix, Arizona, another band called Nazz was formed at about the same time that Nazz was formed in Philadelphia. This group released only one single before moving to Los Angeles and renaming themselves Alice Cooper.
Little did they know however that things were about to change, bringing in a new drummer in the form of Neal Smith gave them what was to become a classic line up and Todd Rundgren calling his band the Nazz gave them the opportunity to come up with a classic name – Alice Cooper.
The original Alice Cooper band broke up in 1975, with the lead singer getting his name legally changed to Alice Cooper -- and performing under the name ever since -- while some of the other members formed a band called the Billion Dollar Babies.
