John William Waterhouse created the Awakening of Adonis in 1899 in the Romanticism style. Creating The Awakening of Adonis was aimed at showing it at the Royal Academy Exhibition that year. However, he did not manage to complete it in time. Instead, he completed the painting in 1990, and it was part of the exhibition that summer.
