The puzzle board is one of the set pieces on Wheel of Fortune. It is the means by which the answers are displayed to contestants.

The first of the pilot episodes, under the Shopper's Bazaar name, used a pull-card system akin to the Jeopardy! board during the Art Fleming era. This puzzle board used three rows of fifteen spaces each, with letters appearing in the Hopkins font. The puzzle board was intended to be automatic, with letters being turned on their own, rather than having someone turn the letters herself or himself.

For the second and third pilots, by which point the show had assumed the name Wheel of Fortune, the board was overhauled into a larger one with 39 trilons in three rows of thirteen. This same board was used when the show went to series in 1975.

These trilons consisted of three sides: sparkly green for spaces not in use, white for spaces in use bot not revealed, and white with a slot for the letters. The letters themselves were on individual plastic slides and printed in the Rockwell Condensed font. Before the start of each round, taping would be paused so stagehands could roll the board off-set and cover it with a screen to insert the letter slides for each round (and remove the previous round's slides for Rounds 2 and later). The board was also illuminated by a ring of chase lights. White blank trilons would light up and a "ding" sound whenever a correct letter was revealed, and the hostess would turn each lit trilon from its "blank" side to its "letter" side. Whenever a puzzle was solved, the entire board would light up and the hostess would turn all unrevealed letters (if any) to show the full answer. In addition, punctuation marks would be lit up and turned before the start of a round if any appeared in the puzzle.

On December 21, 1981, the board was enlarged to four rows totaling 48 spaces: 11 on the top and bottom, and 13 in the middle two. Doing so allowed for considerably longer puzzles, predating the increase in the show's prize budget once the nighttime version began in 1983. This board bore a larger, illuminated outer frame, resembling the number 3 turned sideways. By March 29, 1982 four extra trilons were also added to the corners resulting in them being cut off by the light border and hence could not be used.

A second board was constructed for the first set of road shows taped at Radio City Music Hall in November 1988 during the sixth nighttime season. It was largely identical in nature to the existing one, albeit with a different frame, each trilon spaced further apart and the half-trilons in the corners being removed.

The trilon boards remained in use until February 1997 with only a minor amount of changes. Notably, the appearances of the letters J and Q changed around 1991, and a new frame was added to the regular board at the start of Season 12. This frame appears to have been subject to technical issues; a portion of it was removed before the first weeks were taped, leaving behind noticeable gaps which were later covered up. In addition, the first two weeks of Season 13 used the "road show" board before a new frame was constructed for the existing board.

  5. Pat Sajak has been the host of Wheel of Fortune since 1981, when the show aired on network daytime television. The top-ranked syndicated version made its debut in 1983, and in 2021, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune premiered in primetime on ABC.
