Chester-le-Street at War During the First World War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England. These have been made available by Newcastle Libraries .
According to one strand of historical records it is claimed that in AD 882 after around seven years of wandering the North, the carriers of St Cuthbert’s coffin were granted land at what is now called Chester-le-Street by a Viking king called Guthred.
Over the years the Heritage Group have produced a number of booklets, our two latest are “The Bevin Boys” tells the story of men conscripted during WW2 to work in the mines. Also “Chester Lads & Lasses Remembered” a tribute to those killed during WW1 and are remembered on the town’s war memorials.
The known history of Chester-le-Street dates back to 122AD when a Roman fort was built along the banks of the River Wear. The site of the fort was centred on the Church Chare area, and possibly called “Congangis”.
The War Memorial for Chester-le-Street, which commemorates those killed in both World Wars and subsequent conflicts, was dedicated on 10 May 2015. This memorial is in the Market Place, located between North and South Burns.
Several of the POWs interviewed had served with the DLI or Northumberland Fusiliers, e.g. Arthur Leggett from Chester le Street, who was wounded and taken prisoner in April 1915, whilst serving with the 8th Battalion DLI.
