In the period from its first operation on 12 March, 1942 to 28 August, 1942, the squadron became fully involved in Bomber Command's campaign against the German war industry, attacking 69 targets from which 26 crews were lost, including two flight commanders, Squadron Leaders C.L. Gilbert and J.W.E. Leighton.
As a three-flight unit in a group whose Air-Officer-Commanding believed in loading its aircraft with a maximum bomb tonnage, 460 Squadron regularly put twenty-five Lancasters into the air and elevated itself to the top of most of the statistical ladders.

On the night of Thursday 2nd December 1943, 25 of 460 Squadron’s Lancasters were scheduled for an operation against Berlin. Tragically, five of the aircraft failed to return and, in one of the worst nights of the war for the squadron, 27 aircrew were killed and eight became POWs.
“460”, the first squadron of the R.A.A.F. in England to be equipped with four engine bombers, was formed at Molesworth on Nov. 15th, 1941, and commenced “ops” on “Wellingtons”. It moved to Breighton in the spring of 1942 and opened the “Operation Record Book” with an attack on Emden in March.

Peter Firkins book is almost a day to day history of 460 Squadron. It includes a listing of every raid made by the squadron, including the aircraft lost. A useful appendix gives the operational performance of German night fighters and R.A.F bombers.
