  1. Apr 18, 2024 · It’s polite and it keeps the conversation equal. One of the most important things to do before you leave the house and before a date starts, is getting your mind right. While you can’t control chemistry, compatibility, or attraction, you can make sure you’re mentally ready if they happen.

    • Make sure you're “socially lubricated.” There is no one right way to pregame a date. For some, pregaming might mean a nice big glass of Carbernet; for others, it could be a couple shots of whiskey.
    • Clean yourself up, son. Shower (if you haven’t yet). Wash your face. If you’re a bearded guy, make sure you’re trimmed properly. If not, it’s probably a good idea to give yourself a fresh shave.
    • Listen to some music. Before football games in high school, I used to put on the entire "Ready to Die" album from The Notorious BIG true "pregame" music.
    • Make sure you're strapped with your date essentials. I call it the Holy Trinity of dating. It's easy for women to carry around what they need; that's what purses are for.
  2. Aug 23, 2024 · 5. Brush your teeth and use mouthwash so your breath is fresh. Before you leave for the date, be sure to brush your teeth for 2 minutes to prevent bad breath. Swish a little mouthwash for 30 seconds or so as a final, minty touch. This way, you can talk comfortably knowing your breath is fresh and clean.

    • Clip and Clean Your Fingernails. You’re going to be close enough to another human where they will be able to see your hands and your fingernails. You might not know it, but a lot of people will judge how well you take care of yourself based on your fingernails.
    • Brush Your Teeth, Floss, and Get Some Breath Mints. There is nothing that is going to turn your first date off more than dirty teeth or bad breath. Even if you don’t have the prettiest teeth in the world, you can at least make sure they are as clean as they can be and that your breath is not kicking.
    • Get a Hair Cut or Style Your Hair. You’re going to notice a trend with our first date tips here. We don’t think you have to go out and spend a bunch of money getting yourself ready, but you do have to make an effort.
    • Wash and Iron Your Clothes. This is a personal pet peeve of a lot of the staff here and one that sparked a big discussion when we were writing this guide.
    • Do be confident. Most date advice from anyone should include a recommendation to be confident in yourself and your abilities. Remember that you are not only attractive, but you also have many good qualities that your date will love to see.
    • Don’t overthink things. Overthinking things before first dates can stop them dead in their tracks - even before you have even sat down for coffee or drinks.
    • Do ask questions. Asking someone about themselves can be a great idea on a date and can really help open up conversation between you both. And, crucially, it’s important to remember to listen to the answers to give the best impression.
    • Don’t ask questions that are too deep. This can be a tricky one, but while it’s great to ask your date questions above themselves, try not to get too deep at this point.
  3. Nov 22, 2023 · Let’s start! 1. Relax and be willing to own yourself. The first thing you need to do is take a breath and relax. That is obviously a primary area on any tips for a first date. Don’t get in your head about it. A date is just two people meeting up to see if they have some kind of chemistry or connection.

  5. Apr 5, 2024 · 2. Clean up your place. You never know how your date may go, and the two of you may end up back at your place. You don't want your date to think you're a slob, so really take some time to clean if your place is a mess. Pay special attention to your living room, bedroom, and bathroom.
