  1. First, here’s the release order, which lets all the plot twists and timeline switcheroos (and there’s a lot) fly at you as originally made: Saw (2004) Saw II (2005) Saw III (2006) Saw...

    • Saw - October 29, 2004. The very first Saw was released in 2004 and followed Cary Elwes’ Dr. Lawrence Gordon and Leigh Wannell’s Adam after they wake up in a rundown bathroom chained up in corners opposite from each other.
    • Saw II - October 28, 2005. Following the events of the first movie, 2005’s Saw II sees Detective Eric Matthews and his team closing in on John Kramer, the infamous Jigsaw killer.
    • Saw III - October 27, 2006. Saw III sees Dr. Lynn Denlon, played by Bahar Soomekh, tasked with keeping John Kramer, the Jigsaw killer, alive long enough for one of his brutal games to run its course.
    • Saw IV - October 26, 2007. Saw IV follows Lyriq Bent’s Detective Rigg, who served as a supporting player in both Saw II and Saw III, as he is put through a series of tests to save Detective Eric Matthews, who was captured by Jigsaw after the events of the second movie.

    • Jigsaw (or at least half of it) The seventh film in the franchise actually takes place before the events of Saw. 'Jigsaw' follows five unexpecting individuals wake up in a bar filled with contraptions that have been set by the main perpetrator and it is one of his very first set ups, with this part of the film set to take place before the events of Saw 1.
    • Saw. Understandably perhaps, the first film in the franchise is one of the best to start with as it takes place well before the current day storyline. It is quite clear from the film that it isn't John Kramer's first rodeo that takes place in the movie, however, in the film version this is the first and original Saw and includes his two conspirators: Amanda Young and Mark Hoffman.
    • Saw X. Okay, so the most recent film and the 10th in the series comes next. Released literally weeks ago, Saw X (or Saw 10 if you prefer) takes place in between both Saw 1 and Saw II and saw John Kramer in the weeks after the events of Saw 1 following his cancer diagnosis.
    • Saw II. Next up is the film's second instalment - though there is a flashback to a Kramer suicide attempt which takes place before Saw. The film shows Detective Eric Matthews attempting to find his son and arrest Jigsaw as eight people battle a house filled with poisonous gas.

Here's a guide on how to watch the Saw movies in order

Eight films, 16 years, and countless torture traps later, Saw remains a beloved horror series. The story follows John Kramer, aka the Jigsaw killer, a man who captures people in order to rehabilitate those he deems unworthy.

    •Saw IV (2007)

    •Saw V (2008)

    •Saw VI (2009)

This all leads to one inevitable question: what are the best Saw movies? Everyone’s opinions differ on this topic, of course, with personal preferences being taken into account (we’re fond of the first three).

Here, we’re letting the film community speak for themselves, by ranking the Saw movies via their IMDB user ratings. To be honest, the general consensus feels pretty accurate to us. It’s interesting to note that newest entry Spiral sits quite high on the list already, but that could all change once the movie is widely available.

    • Half of 'Jigsaw' The actual test taking place in 2017's Jigsaw, which sees five people—each with a horrible secret—wake up in a deathtrap-filled barn, is actually one of the very first games orchestrated by John Kramer, taking place well before the events of Saw.
    • 'Saw' In terms of the main, current-day storyline being told by the Saw franchise, James Wan's original film is the starting block. However, as revealed through many, many subsequent flashbacks, this isn't even close to Kramer's first trap, and by this point, he had already recruited two conspirators: Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) and Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor).
    • 'Saw X' Saw X takes place just a few weeks after the events of Saw with John Kramer being given his cancer diagnosis and finding hope of a cure through a member of his cancer support group, which takes him on a trip to Mexico.
    • 'Saw II' The Saw II plotline that sees Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) apprehending the Jigsaw Killer and trying to find the whereabouts of his son, Daniel (Eric Knudsen), takes place about a year after Saw.
