When Sven's mother died, he was "taken care of" by Höglund (Hans Alfredsson), an evil, rich factory owner who is a member of the local Swedish Nazi party, and lives on a farm. Sven must work on Höglund's farm without payment, and sleep among cows in the stables, where he is tormented by a rat.
Rather than use a blustery, ineffectual stableman as his central character, Alfredson creates a social outcast doomed from birth. The Simple-Minded Murderer is an eloquent portrait of a man treated as a fool, a man denied the opportunity to live and love because of his disfigurement.
The two main actors (Hans Alfredsson and Stellan Skarsgård) make top performances in this movie about Evil personalized. It´s also a movie about Sweden in the late 30´s with poverty and pre-war nazism close at hand.
