Oct 8, 2019 · To misappropriate 16th century political philosopher Thomas Hobbes’ most famous utterance, Harpoon is “nasty, brutish and short”. But in a good way – a very good way! And while it’s not a deep dive, chin-stroking treatise, neither is it shallow-end fluff.

The film opens to Gelman’s blunt narration, which operates as a sustained dark comedy mechanism while also categorically expressing the levels of friendship: The friendship of utility (like a co-worker), the friendship of pleasure, and friendship of the good (mutual respect). I’m not sure the narrator was necessary. Sure, this sarcastic voice moves things along swiftly, but much of what he tells us is clear from what we’re shown.

  5. Nov 7, 2019 · Harpoon” is, to be clear, not for the faint of heart, nor for the weak of stomach. Its back half is grisly, gory stuff, full of infected wounds, improvised amputations and messy bleed-outs.
