Assheton was descended from a younger son of the first Sir Ralph Assheton of Middleton in the 15th century, who married the heiress of Great Lever. His father was created a baronet in 1620 and served in the usual county offices, but his later years were unfortunate.
He inherited Downham from his father, but devised it at his death to his kinsman, Sir Ralph Assheton, 2nd bt. of Great Lever and Whalley. He died 8 October 1657. Assheton family of Cuerdale Hall and Downham Hall, baronets and Barons Clitheroe Assheton, Radclyffe (1582-1645) of Cuerdale Hall.

This Member has previously been confused with two namesakes. Sep 30, 2024 · Sir Ralph Assheton of Downham in 1679 left money to 'gratify two able and orthodox ministers' who were to preach two sermons each at Whalley and Downham, and a further sum for the poor of the same places, particularly those who were 'constant comers to church.'
Assheton was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1668. In 1665, he succeeded to his father's baronetcy and in 1696, he inherited the family's estates in Downham near Whalley, Lancashire from his uncle Sir John Assheton, 4th Baronet, of Lever.
