The fairground at the edge of the woods Marie and Woyzeck are at the fair. They are invited into a show tent by a showman, who tells of all the wonders inside. As they go in, the Drum-Major and the Sergeant enter the fairground. They both ogle Marie, then go inside the tent.
Soldiers Woyzeck and Andres are chopping wood outside the provincial German town where they are stationed. While Andres sings, Woyzeck talks nonsensically about cursed mushrooms. Hearing the sound of trumpets and drums in the distance, the men make their way to town.
