The legacy text form field (created from the button shown in the picture above) does allow you to set a maximum number of characters in its Properties dialog: Enter a number in the box in place of the default "Unlimited". Each text form field may have a different maximum length.

You can limit the amount of text that users can type in a text box. For example, on a survey form template, you can use this feature to prevent users from typing more than 500 characters in a comments box. You can design the form template so that the user's cursor moves automatically to the next control on the form after the character limit is reached.
Right-click the text box for which you want to limit characters, and then click
check box, and then specify the number of characters that you want.
To make the user's cursor advance automatically to the next control on the form after he or she reaches the character limit, select the
Move to next control automatically when limit is reached
If you enable paragraph breaks for a text box, the character limit option will not be available.

Sep 20, 2019 · In my excel workbook, WORKSHEET1 has a text box that contains the formula =SHEET2!B25. The text in the text box cuts off at 255 characters. If I create a 2nd text box on WORKSHEET1 and just enter text, I can go well beyond 250 characters.

Jul 8, 2020 · I have a dynamically changing cell in my spreadsheet (dependent on the currently selected cell), and I'm trying to have it automatically enter into a Text Box; however, the cell has more than 255 characters typically and when I set the Text Box equal to that cell, only the first 255 characters of the cell show up.
Character limits in <textarea> can easily be imposed via javascript. Twitter shows the remaining available characters, and will let you type more than that in but shows it as an error (and disables the action button).
