Mar 28, 2023 · When it comes to wild swimming locations in the UK, the Lake District is right up there with the very best. Epic lakes, tranquil tarns, hidden caves and natural infinity pools just to name a few – perhaps the most renowned swimming spot in the whole National Park is Lake Windermere .
- Windermere. Area: 5.75 sq. miles Maximum depth: 67 metres Length: 11.25 miles Width: 1 mile. The largest and most famous of all, Windermere can be found in the southern part of the Lake District National Park.
- Ullswater. Area: 3.5 sq. miles Maximum depth: 63 metres Length: 7.5 miles Width: 0.75 miles. Several lakes in the UK lay claim to being the fabled and hallowed site where the sword Excalibur was betrothed to King Arthur in the legend.
- Derwentwater. Area: 2 sq. miles Maximum depth: 22 metres Length: 2 miles Width: 1.25 miles. Derwentwater is close to Keswick and is very picturesque thanks to the forest-covered fells that roll down to the shoreline around much of lake.
- Bassenthwaite Lake. Area: 2 sq. miles Maximum depth: 21 metres Length: 4 miles Width: 0.75 miles. Lying at the foot of Skiddaw, and close to the town of Keswick, Bassenthwaite Lake is the northernmost body of water in the Lake District National Park.
- FELL FOOT, WINDERMERE. Best wild swimming near comfortable facilities and lessons. Windermere is the largest body of water in the Lake District. Regular boat traffic can make swimming difficult, but Fell Foot National Trust Park and Garden, at the southern end, is a family-friendly swimming lake near Windermere.
- GLENRIDDING, ULLSWATER. Best wild swimming in the Lake District for young kids and families. At the southern end of Ullswater, in the town of Glenridding, gently sloping beaches descend into a beautiful part of the lake.
- GLENRIDDING BECK. Best rewarding swim in the Lake District after a long ridge hike. Glenridding Beck is a small swimming spot near the village of Glenridding.
