Thundarr the Barbarian is an American Saturday morning animated series, created by Steve Gerber (of Howard the Duck fame) and produced by Ruby-Spears Productions. [1] The series ran for two seasons on ABC from October 4, 1980, to October 31, 1981, and was rerun on NBC in 1983.
Thundarr is a barbarian from parts unknown. All that is known, is that he was captured and enslaved by an evil wizard named Sabian. He was forced to fight as a gladiator, but he freed himself and lead a slave revolt.
Thundarr was the typical barbarian character, once a slave of the wizard Sabian until Ariel, who was his stepdaughter, freed him. He wielded an energy sword called the Sunsword that was capable of deflecting magical and energy attacks. The sword’s magical nature meant only Thundarr could use it, but their link could be broken.
The Sunsword is a magical weapon used by Thundarr. It was created by an unknown wizard and was given to Thundarr by Princess Ariel. The blade of the sword is made of pure energy and can cut through most materials (notable exceptions bronze and Swamp Beast's shoulder) with ease.

Thundarr, Ookla and Ariel got together when Ariel, step-daughter of the evil wizard Sabien, helped Thundarr and Ookla escape from Sabien's prison, setting slaves free as they did. They then embarked on a life of adventure, toppling oppressors and righting wrongs wherever they went.
