The story is narrated by Joe Coutts, a 13-year-old boy whose world is shattered when his mother, Geraldine, is brutally attacked and sexually assaulted. As a result of the assault, Geraldine is traumatized and unwilling to disclose the details of the incident to Joe and his father, Bazil.
