For Schools. White Ribbon Week teaches important principles of online safety through short, but thoughtful conversations. Each day students are taught a new and important principle which helps guide them in their use of technology--we call these “Power Boosts.”
The White Ribbon is the globally recognised symbol to end men’s violence against women and girls. Since the inception of the White Ribbon movement 35 years ago in Canada, the White Ribbon has become an important symbol in the fight to end gender-based violence.
What is White Ribbon Week? White Ribbon Week consists of 5 fun-filled days at school to help students think carefully about their online choices. White Ribbon Week addresses many issues including online safety, cyberbullying, indecent media, screen time and emotional wellness.
“White Ribbon Week is a positive school program presented by volunteers or teachers that helps kids make healthy choices in media and technology. Every day, kids learn a new principle of online behavior—reinforced through discussions and fun activities. This program is research-based and kid tested” (www.whiteribbonweek.org).
What happens during White Ribbon Week? We urge men and boys to wear a ribbon, including one on their coat so the ribbon will be visible while they’re outdoors. We encourage men to talk in schools, workplaces, and places of worship about the problem of violence.
This White Ribbon Day, we’re encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women, and to each other, so we can affect positive behaviour change to transform harmful cultures. Gender equality is key to making this culture change happen.
