Nov 7, 2023 · Plot structure is the order in which the events of a story unfold. In western storytelling traditions, it’s usually built out of five stages: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Plot drives the cause-and-effect nature of a story, helping bring everything full circle for the characters and the audience. Additionally, it adds a sense of structure to the story, connecting each event and plot point in a cohesive way. Essentially, the plot answers the question, “What happens in the story?”
I'll share a broad definition of plot, then dive into the approach we use at The Write Practice (called The Write Structure), and finally you'll learn the six elements of plot that make stories entertaining and memorable.

What is plot structure? I’m using the terms plot structure and plot formula synonymously. I’m sure every writer has their own definition, but for the purposes of this post, I’d like to define a plot structure or plot formula as any simplified story framework that helps you create your own story.
Its seven elements are as follows: Exposition: The opening introduces the characters, setting, and situation to the audience/readers. Inciting Incident: This is the single event that sparks conflict or sets the ball rolling toward it, setting in motion the plot’s action.
