Shutter Island is a great film because it has more going on than a series of plot actions. It's exploration of its themes and characters is captivating and deeply interesting. Not to mention it's brilliant cinematography, use of music and overall direction.
Plot. Shutter Island, Dennis Lehane’s 2003 psychological thriller, investigates how a person’s mental state can shape their perspective of reality. The prologue opens with an excerpt from Dr. Lester Sheehan’s diary dated May 3rd, 1993.
First Plot Point: While having to stay over on the island due to a hurricane, Teddy dreams of his dead wife, who disintegrates into ashes in his arms (despite being sopping wet). She tells him, “Laeddis is here.”
