Yes, Michael Shannon is great in The Iceman. Yet the fact remains that you can watch him be great in a whole lot of much better movies. In a vacuum, this is some of Shannon's finest work. It's unfortunate the film isn't as good as he is. Who cares if the story makes sense, because Michael Shannon can carry it, right? He can, but only so far.
