Christmas trees originated from Germany and were introduced to England in the early 19 th century. They were popularised by Prince Albert, who was born in Germany, and his wife Queen Victoria and decorated with toys, small gifts, candles, ribbons and fancy chains.
The History of Christmas Trees. 1510 – The first written record of a decorated Christmas Tree comes from Riga, Latvia. Men of the local merchants’ guild decorated a tree with artificial roses, danced around it in the marketplace and then set fire to it.
The true milestone came in 1848 when the Illustrated London News published a drawing of the Queen, Prince Albert, and their family standing around a lavishly decorated tree. This really spurred widespread public interest in Christmas trees, not only in Britain but in the United States as well.
